End of my First Semester

 


End of Semester One


Today marked the completion of my first semester of university and I couldn’t be happier. Never did I think that I would enjoy something as much as I enjoyed going to school, but university enables me to be and do so much more. The past three months have been a journey, but I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I’ve made friends, found my new safe place, made memories which I will remember forever and have started to learn things that will enable me to pursue a career doing things that I generally enjoy. I would be lying if I said that it’s been easy, it hasn’t and there have been times where I’ve wanted to give up. Each time though I’ve been reminded of why I started, and that answer has made me keep going. Even now, the thought of starting again next year makes me excited. I look forward to the memories and things to be learnt that the next year will bring.

How my autism diagnosis changed me. When I was first diagnosed with autism, I was determined to not let my diagnosis change who I was. People close to me reassured me by saying things like I was still the same person. At the time this did help me accept and come to terms with my diagnosis. However, looking back now I think it is unfair to say to people going through an autism assessment/ diagnosis process, that an autism diagnosis doesn’t change you, that you’re still the same person after you’ve been diagnosed. Of course, it doesn’t change you physically, it’s not something that people can suddenly see - for a lot of individuals with autism, people wouldn’t be able to tell they were autistic.
